Sixteen months ago Duke bought Progress Energy. On December 5, 2013 Duke sent the Union a letter containing official notification of the Company's intent to Terminate our contract. Our existing Contract will terminate at 23:59 on February 3, 2014 unless the parties reach an agreement for a new contract.
The following is contained in the letter from the Company.
The Union would like to remind our members that the Labor-Management Relations Act (LMRA) imposes upon employers and labor unions a "mutual obligation. During this 60-day notice period, all parties must abide by the terms of the contract that are currently in force and may not conduct a strike or a lock-out. Because of these provisions barring strikes and lock-outs, the notice periods are sometimes referred to as "cooling-off periods."
The Union will continue to meet with the Company on an ongoing and continuing basis with the mission of obtaining a fair contract containing negotiated comprehensive benefits and competitive wages.
On behalf of the entire negotiating committee, I want to thank all the IBEW members for their support and the way you are performing your jobs in a safe, efficient and professional manner. We will continue to negotiate in good faith with the Company as we move closer to our goal of obtaining a contract that we can recommend to our members.
Please watch out for your fellow Sisters and Brothers. Don’t become distracted from the tasks at hand. Please know that your Union representatives are committed to you and are working very hard to represent all of you. Finally, please continue to work safely.
