COVID-19 Union Update
Updated On: Apr 94, 2020

Sisters and Brothers,

These are strange and scary times. I realize working during a worldwide pandemic, when most of the country is closed, leaves you anxious and concerned about being exposed and potentially exposing your loved ones to this horrible disease. This update won't ease those concerns; honestly, I'm just as concerned as you. No one truly knows what tomorrow will bring but all indications suggest this will get worse before it gets better. As businesses close and employees are laid off or furloughed, the electric utility and it's skilled craft personnel remain a vital necessity. You must keep the lights on but you must do so in as safe an environment as reasonably possible. The Union has continued to communicate with management and voice your concerns in attempts to ensure your safety as you perform that essential role. Please understand however, the Union does not and cannot dictate or mandate the work being scheduled or performed. We can make suggestions, and we have. Management has the right to manage their business...as they see fit, as long as they do so within the limits of our contract. You have the right to challenge those decisions through the grievance process or through constructive conversations with your management team. Keep in mind, you also have Article VII, Section 8(A), which states: "The safety of employees is a matter of paramount importance, and no employee shall be required to take undue risks in the performance of his duties. Where not specifically covered by this agreement, the Company Safety Rules shall govern the work. An employee may refuse any job which he/she reasonably considers to be unsafe for him/her to perform."

The Union will continue to work with and communicate with your management team and explore different ways of keeping you as safe and free of exposure as possible. Please continue to communicate your concerns with your Union leaders and your supervisors but most importantly please continue to work safely and watch out for one another. Thank you.

Fraternally Yours,

Phil
